How carbon underfloor heating works

The floor becomes the radiator.

A 5 mm carbon layer, powered by electricity, covers the whole surface of the floor. It radiates like the sun: it heats the walls, the furniture and the people, not just the air. Two diagrams to see what that changes.

Diagram 1

The path of the heat

In a conventional heating system, the heat is produced far from the room and has to travel to you. With Carbosol, it starts in the floor of the room. There is nothing between the source and you.

1 step · the heat starts where you are
  • 4 steps in a central heating system: the heat is produced far from the room, then transported. A boiler loses energy along the way; a heat pump, on the contrary, gives nearly three times more than it consumes.
  • 1 step with Carbosol: electricity becomes heat directly under your feet.
  • No screed to heat: the room goes from 17 to 21 °C in 30 to 45 minutes depending on the building, according to the manufacturer.
Diagram 2

Heat where you are

Look where the heat goes. A radiator heats the air, the air rises, and your ceiling is the best-heated room in the house. The carbon floor radiates from its whole surface: it is you that it heats. A schematic diagram, not a measurement.

  • Radiator: it heats the air first, and warm air rises.
  • Carbon floor: the whole surface of the floor radiates, at between 20 and 24 °C according to the manufacturer.
  • One thermostat per room: each room has its own temperature and its own schedule.

Fewer parts, fewer breakdowns

No pump, no boiler, no pipes, no moving parts. Nothing to service every year. The only part that gets replaced is the thermostat, according to the manufacturer.

Laid in one day, on the existing floor

We break nothing. The room is handed back the same evening, heating on. No rubble, no dust all over the house, no night in a hotel.

Warm in 15 minutes, room by room

Warm feet in a quarter of an hour, 17 to 21 °C in 30 to 45 minutes depending on the building, according to the manufacturer. Each room has its own thermostat: you do not heat the guest room for nothing.

Proof in pictures

You cannot see underfloor heating. Through a thermal camera, you can.

Every fitting ends with a thermal camera check: we bring the floor up to temperature and watch the whole surface heat before handing the room back to you.

Heating cost simulator

And at your place, how much would it cost?

A heating system is not compared on the price per kWh, but on what it costs over a year: energy, servicing, equipment. Describe your home and the heating you are comparing. The calculation uses the coefficients of the French energy performance certificate; electricity and gas prices are Eurostat's. It also says when our floor works out more expensive.

Your home

Six answers are enough. The values update as you type.

Country
2,5 °C Pre-filled from your region (December–February average). Adjust it if you live at altitude or near the coast.

Refine with my figures (optional)
Heating only: take out hot water and cooking if the same energy supplies them. Heating oil: litres × 10. Pellets: tonnes × 4,600.
All taxes and standing charge included: the year's bill, divided by the kWh.
The one you would pay to heat with the floor, standing charge included.
Chimney sweeping included. Empty field: the assumption written in grey applies.
Equipment and fitting. Empty field: the assumption written in grey applies.
  • 1 dayof fitting for one to two rooms according to the manufacturer, floor covering included; an electrician makes the connection.
  • €0of compulsory servicing: no moving parts, no annual visit.
  • 20 yearsof warranty stated by the manufacturer, which rates the system for at least 50 years. A heat pump: 17 years in the official energy savings sheets.
  • €8,500for 100 m² at our indicative price, excluding floor covering and water heater. An air-to-water heat pump: €14,700 on average according to the Ministry for the Ecological Transition.
How it is calculated

Indicative estimate: neither a quote nor an energy calculation. The calculation follows the form of the French regulatory calculation for the energy performance certificate, the 3CL-DPE 2021 method: consumption = demand × intermittency ÷ (generation × emission × distribution × control). The heating demand is that of the home: it does not change with the heating. The whole kWh gap between two heating systems lies in these five factors. For the distribution, control and intermittency of central heating, we took the most favourable values in the method. For boilers, the lower threshold of class A. For electric heating, NF-certified convectors (NF is a French quality mark); NF-certified radiant panels or radiators do slightly better, and the floor then uses about 9% more than they do. The method is French: we apply it as it stands to all four countries.

What each heating system delivers

HeatingGenerationEmissionDistributionControlIntermittencykWh bought per 100 kWh of demand
Carbosol electric underfloor heating 1.001.001.00 0.980.8688
NF-certified electric convectors 1.000.951.00 0.990.7782
Gas boiler, radiators 0.900.950.95 0.950.82106
Oil boiler, radiators 0.9630.950.95 0.950.8299
Pellet boiler, radiators 0.8320.950.95 0.950.82115
Air-to-water heat pump, radiators 2.900.950.95 0.950.8233

Emission, distribution, control and intermittency: values in the method for a house of light or medium thermal inertia, with room-by-room control and a minimum temperature; for central heating, insulated pipework and thermostatic valves. Generation: a gas or oil boiler at the threshold of class A of the energy label, that is 90% on gross calorific value; a pellet boiler at the threshold of the energy savings sheet for 20 kW at most, that is 77%; a heat pump at 2.9, the average measured by ADEME on 90 air-to-water heat pumps fitted in houses in place of a boiler. Heating oil and pellets are billed on net calorific value: the table gives their efficiency on that basis. The method puts all electric underfloor heating on a single line, thin film or cable embedded in a screed. We count no saving linked to radiant heat: no independent measurement puts a figure on it.

The heating demand

Area × 60, 100, 175 or 265 kWh per m² per year depending on the insulation, corrected for the climate: (18 °C − average winter temperature), relative to Metz (2.5 °C). These are the site's assumptions: no public body publishes a heating demand by energy class. We derived them from the energy certificates of houses registered by ADEME; actual consumption is generally lower than this standardised calculation. The demand does not change the gap as a percentage of kWh, but it changes the gap in euros: the more the home consumes, the more the price per kWh weighs. Give your metered consumption: the calculation then starts from your reading. The pre-filled winter temperature is also an assumption of the site, an order of magnitude by region.

The result is also compared with the manufacturer's eleven meter readings: 18 to 64 kWh per m² per year, ten out of eleven under 36; it sums them up as “15 to 50”.

These average prices include the standing charge: the simulator adds none. In the Netherlands, the average price rises with consumption: the kWh added by heating probably costs more there than this average. Heating oil: average of the 52 weeks ending on 5 October 2026 in the European Commission's oil bulletin, that is €1.47 per litre in France, €1.08 in Belgium and €1.15 in Luxembourg, at 9.97 kWh per litre; official maximum prices in Belgium and Luxembourg; the price for the latest week is higher, €1.91 in France; the Netherlands does not report heating oil there. Pellets: France only, price used by the energy performance certificate, data from the end of 2023; they have fallen since, so this price puts them at a disadvantage. A dash: no official price used, the simulator asks you for yours.

Belgium and the Netherlands: for electricity, the intensity of the country's generation in 2024 according to the European Environment Agency, which counts neither imports nor upstream emissions; for gas and heating oil, the combustion factors of the European regulation on emissions reporting. In Belgium, we did not take the factor of the Walloon certificates, 0.644 kg per kWh, far above current generation: with it, the floor emits more than gas. These bases are not the same: compare the two columns of one country, not two countries with each other. A dash: no factor used, in which case the simulator shows no CO₂.

An amount marked “assumption” has no official source. Replace it with your contract or your quote under “Refine with my figures”. Gas and oil boilers: median price before tax, fitting included, from ADEME's 2017 and 2018 survey, plus 5.5% VAT; these prices are eight years old. Heat pump: average cost according to the Ministry for the Ecological Transition, which specifies neither the fitting nor the floor area; the same ADEME survey would give €12,800. These French amounts are used for all four countries. They are taken for 100 m² and follow the square root of the floor area, another assumption of the site; the price of the floor is proportional to the area. Service lives: those of the energy savings sheets; for gas and oil boilers, that of the former sheet, withdrawn in 2024. The heating in place is provisioned as if it had to be replaced in due course by an appliance of the same type, without interest, even if it is recent and even where the rule no longer allows a new one. Carbosol floor: €85 per m² fitted. That is our indicative price, not a published price; your quote prevails. It is spread per year over the 20 years of the warranty stated by the manufacturer, and nothing is counted beyond that.

What the simulator does not count

  • Hot water: if your boiler or heat pump produces it, you will need a water heater, about €2,500 for a house in the manufacturer's example, and its electricity; yet the price and servicing of the boiler are counted here in full. The floor covering, which always has to be laid on top. The thermostat, the only part to be replaced one day. Your meter: a higher contracted capacity may be needed. The rule in your country on direct electric heating: it is recalled under the result.
  • Excluding grants and subsidies: they change often and depend on your situation. MaPrimeRénov' in France, Mijn VerbouwPremie in Flanders, Klimabonus in Luxembourg and ISDE in the Netherlands fund a heat pump, not direct electric heating: if you qualify, deduct the grant from the price of the heat pump.

Carbosol in two minutes

Carbon underfloor heating in France, Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands.

Carbosol installs IREWA carbon underfloor heating, as the manufacturer's official partner and reseller: an electric underfloor heating system 5 mm thick, laid in one day on top of the existing floor, without breaking up the screed or trimming the doors. Renovation is where it belongs; in a new build, the project's energy calculation decides whether it fits. The carbon layer heats across the whole surface laid, by radiation, like the sun: warm feet, air that is not dried out. The heating film has passed TÜV NORD CERT type examination (EN 60335-1) and carries the CE marking. The manufacturer gives a 20-year warranty on the system, with no maintenance, and designs it to last at least 50 years; at the meter, it has measured between 15 and 50 kWh/m²/year of heating depending on the building.

From Metz, in north-eastern France, Carbosol designs, supplies and fits with its own teams across France, Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands, for homeowners (one room or the whole house, depending on the rule in your country) and for professionals: architects, developers, builders, landlords, floor layers, tilers, electricians. One call is enough for a room-by-room quote within 24 h: Thomas (French, German) or Andrei (French, English, Russian) answers you directly.

Frequently asked questions

The questions that keep coming up on the phone.

How much does it cost per square metre?

It depends on the area, the insulation, the floor covering chosen and the state of the existing floor. We avoid quoting a price per square metre over the phone: either it is too low and you are disappointed when you sign, or it is too high and you hang up for nothing. Give us the area and the postcode, and you have a real figure within 24 h.

Can carbon heating replace my main heating?

In France, yes, in an existing home: we have found no text that limits direct electric heating there. In Wallonia, Flanders, Luxembourg and the Netherlands, a text caps it or rules it out as main heating: one room or a bathroom most often remains possible. In a new build, it is the project's design study that says whether it is suitable. What each country allows.

How much thickness should I allow for in a renovation?

5 mm for the heating assembly (carbon, insulation, reflector), where a traditional underfloor heating system needs around sixty. We lay directly on the existing floor, so there is no screed to grind down and, in the great majority of cases, no doors to trim.

How long does the fitting take?

One day for a typical room, heating and floor covering included. For the heating alone, the manufacturer counts about 75 m² a day for a team of two. Two trades, one contact, one invoice. Fitting, step by step.

Which floor coverings are compatible?

Wood, tiles, vinyl and laminate. Wood flooring remains our most requested option; we recommend oak, which moves very little between summer and winter.

What consumption should I expect?

Between 15 and 50 kWh per m² a year according to the manufacturer, which read the meter in eleven buildings for at least a year, from an 1890 apartment block to a 2022 house; the median is around 24, and a house built around 1900, with no insulation, reaches 64. It all depends on the insulation and on how you heat: see its readings, building by building, and their limits. The simulator above gives you a first idea; then send us your energy certificate and your bills, and we refine the figure before you order.

Do you work outside Metz?

Yes: all of France, Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands, with our own teams, no subcontractors. The design and the quote are done from Metz, the fitting at your home.

What is the warranty?

20 years according to the manufacturer, which states a written warranty on the materials: ask us for its terms before you sign. No maintenance and no wearing parts. Again according to the manufacturer, the heating film has passed TÜV NORD CERT type examination to EN 60335-1 and carries the CE marking; the system has been in service since 2012. What each certificate establishes.

Are oil and gas heating still allowed?

It depends on the country. In France, no new oil boiler has been fitted since 1 July 2022: an emissions cap set by decree rules it out, with some exemptions. Gas is ruled out of new builds in practice by the RE2020 standard, for houses since 2022 and apartment buildings since 2025, and a decree excludes it from homes whose permit is applied for from 1 January 2027; replacing a gas boiler in an existing home is still allowed. In Belgium the rule depends on the region, in Luxembourg the heat pump is the reference for new builds, and in the Netherlands new buildings have had no gas connection since 2018. The simulator shows the rule for your country, with its source, and we check your case with you.

Am I entitled to grants?

For the heating itself, rarely. MaPrimeRénov' in France, Mijn VerbouwPremie in Flanders, Klimabonus in Luxembourg and ISDE in the Netherlands fund heat pumps, not direct electric heating. In Brussels, the RENOLUTION grants are suspended; in Wallonia, loans replaced grants on 1 October 2026. The rest depends on your situation and on the work done at the same time, and schemes change often. Describe your project to us: we tell you what applies in your case, without promising the impossible.

Why does Carbosol not work in Germany?

Because the manufacturer, IREWA, distributes its system there itself. Our partnership covers France, Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. The details, and who to turn to.
