Guides
Understand it before you ask for a quote.
What we lay, how much height it takes, what it uses, and what to compare it with. Short pages, written to be checked.
Where to start
New to the subject? Read the system, layer by layer first, then fitting without screed: you will know what we lay in your home and how much height it adds. Fitting, step by step describes the job, and the thermostat what you will set afterwards.
Depending on your floor
The floor covering decides the finished height and the way of laying: under wood flooring, under tiles, under vinyl or laminate.
Depending on your project
In an apartment, the weight and the co-ownership matter. To replace electric radiators, it is the timing that matters. For an added storey, a loft or an extension, the height and the load. For a cellar, the damp.
Before you compare quotes
First the rule in your country: outside France, it limits what direct electric heating can heat. Then five pages set out the figures: measured consumption, heat pump or carbon underfloor heating, water-based or electric underfloor heating, the four families of carbon heating film, and the drawbacks, written by us.
The evidence
Warranty and certifications says what each document establishes. The thermal camera check shows what we verify at the end of the job. Official IREWA partner says who makes it, and who fits it.
Does a word in the quote stop you? The glossary explains it in a sentence or two.
How these pages are written
Every figure has its source, at the foot of the page. What comes from the manufacturer is stated as such. Where a page compares, it also says what counts against us.

All guides
- The carbon systemA 0.45 mm carbon film that heats across its whole surface, under your floor covering. Build-up, outputs, temperatures and limits, according to the manufacturer.
- Fitting without screedFitting underfloor heating with no screed to break or pour: 5 mm on the existing floor, 13 to 50 mm with floor covering. Heights by floor covering, weight, time, limits.
- Fitting, step by stepBefore, during and after the fitting of carbon underfloor heating: the design, the steps on the day, the times stated by the manufacturer, what to prepare.
- Thermostat and controlOne thermostat per room, connected to the carbon film: what it controls, where to put it, how to programme it, and the temperature not to go below.
- Under wood flooringA 5 mm carbon film under floating wood flooring: 16 to 20 mm in all, no screed, no glue. Which wood flooring is suitable, at what temperature, and what is not done.
- Under tilesUnder tiles, the carbon film needs a decoupling mat or a dry screed: 23 to 40 mm in all. Bathroom, shower, old tiles.
- Under vinyl or laminateUnder click vinyl of at least 8 mm: 13 to 16 mm in all, with no screed and no glue. Under laminate: 15 to 19 mm. The conditions, the temperatures, the limits.
- In an apartment5 mm and 1.25 kg per m², with no boiler and no pipes between floors: what makes underfloor heating possible in an apartment, and what to check first.
- Replacing electric radiatorsYou already heat with electricity: no boiler to remove, no pipes to lay. What carbon underfloor heating changes, what it does not change, and when to do it.
- Added storey, loft, extensionAn added storey comes up against weight, height and a central heating system that was not designed for it. 5 mm, 1.25 kg per m², its own power supply: the comparison.
- Cellar and basementA converted cellar is used now and then: it needs heating that warms up fast, without losing height. Conditions, damp, minimum temperature, limits.
- The rule, country by countryMain heating or room by room: what France, Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands allow for direct electric heating, with the legal texts to back it up.
- Measured consumption15 to 50 kWh per m² per year according to the manufacturer, median 24. Its eleven meter readings, building by building: what they prove, what they do not prove.
- Heat pump or carbonA heat pump uses two to three times less electricity, but costs more to buy and to maintain. Independent measurements, the manufacturer's calculation, case by case.
- Water-based or electricWater-based underfloor heating needs a screed and a heat generator, and uses less with a heat pump. Thin electric heating goes on the existing floor.
- Carbon heating filmStriped film, fleece, paint or full-surface film: four products go by the name of carbon heating. What sets them apart, and when a simple film is enough.
- The drawbacksPrice per kilowatt-hour, no grant, separate hot water, a floor to redo, energy rating: the limits of electric underfloor heating, written by people who fit it.
- Warranty and certificationsTÜV NORD CERT type examination, CE marking, pollutant testing, patent, the manufacturer's 20-year warranty: what each document proves, and where to check it.
- Thermal cameraEvery Carbosol fitting ends with a thermal camera check: what the image shows, why carbon heats with no coil to be seen, and what we look for.
- IREWA partnerCarbosol is an official partner and reseller of IREWA, the 5 mm carbon underfloor heating from Carbon Heizsysteme GmbH: who makes it and what the partnership covers.
- GlossaryDry screed, decoupling mat, levelling compound, hysteresis, primary energy, type examination: the words of an underfloor heating quote, briefly explained.
